Show Description:
For over 40 years,
Danspace Project
has supported a vital community of contemporary dance artists in an environment unlike any other in the United States. Located in the historic
St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery
,
Danspace
shares its facility with the Church and
The Poetry Project .
Danspace Project's Commissioning Initiative has commissioned over 400 new works since its inception in 1994.
In 2009-2010, Danspace Project
launched the
Choreographic Center Without Walls (CW2)
, a new framework to examine and re-invigorate dance presenting practices. The linchpin of CW2 is the
PLATFORMS
series, which invites guest artist-curators to curate a series of performances; create catalogues and facilitate activities that contextualize the performances; and to provide residency, technical, and dramaturgical support for the presented artists
"Danspace is one of the most beautiful venues in the world. New York City is much richer for its existence and its example".
---
Steve Paxton
, choreographer

REVIEWS
"Let us now praise New York dancers...The sheer amount of performance talent in this city—well, it’s ridiculous. And getting such a concentrated dose of it is a reminder that, for all the arguments against living here (the real estate! the weather!), there is something fiercely particular about New Yorkers, and something particularly sublime about New York dance artists."
- Claudia La Rocco, New York Times on Danspace

This gorgeous, high-ceilinged sanctuary for downtown dance is at its most sublime when the music is live. The work of choreographers who take on the four-sided performance space ranges from pure movement to technological experimentation.
